At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection consists of six press photographs of Martin Luther King Jr., dated 1965 to 1968. Photographs are portraits of him, Coretta Scott King and wirephotos from notable events in Dr. King's activism. This includes photographs of the Selma to Montgomery March on March 21, 1965, religious leaders in a protest against the Vietnam War on March 25, 1967, and press announcements. Handful of images are attributed to AP and UPI Photo agencies, otherwise creator is unknown.
