At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One press photograph of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas taking his oath before his confirmation hearings dated September 10, 1991. On the reverse side is a newspaper clipping pasted with a caption. The caption identifies Thomas taking his oath before Joseph Biden. The text reads, "Thomas promised to remember the values of his heritage as a poor black from the South if he is confirmed by the Senate."

At the time Biden was serving as the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman.
