At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter dated January 16, 1965 from Tony. Requests the address of Kitty Paul. Says he might be home in May and that he was having fun "wrecking jeeps." Expresses best wishes to Dujka's parents and siblings. Finishes letter describing tough waves when he rides on a rubber boat.
