At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One typed letter from Arthur Ruhl to William N. Haskell dated Ufa, Russia, June 5, 1922. Ruhl relays progress made in districts in Moscow; attempts made to get car fixed or acquire a new Dodge car; and a situation by which the rental car was heavily loaded with food packages that drew attention from local people.
