At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One certificate from William Ritchie dated Frederick County Court, May 7, 1807 addressed to the State of Maryland. Grants freedom to a formerly enslaved woman Jenny Maynard. States that this was drafted by Henry Maynard who granted her manumission per a supplemental act. Also describes Maynard's physical characteristics. Document was drafted and signed by Frederick County Court clerk, William Ritchie.

The supplement act referred to in the document is No. 67, "An act relating to negroes, and to repeal the acts of assembly therein mentioned," from the Proceedings and Act of General Assembly, 1796.
