Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph by Sherman A. Gessert, Jr. dated April 16, 1966. Shows Vietnam antiwar protestors carrying signs reading "Make Love, Not War," "Slay Away With LBJ," and "Kill for Peace." Protestors demonstrated at a parade sponsored by the Allied Veterans Council of Milwaukee County in support of the war. Saluting sailors are visible in the foreground. Photograph appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
