At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto released by the United Press International dated June 3, 1970. Shows an aerial view of the southern end of Alcatraz Island, where five buildings were damaged by a fire on June 2. Caption notes that a spokesman for the Government Services Administration blamed the Native Americans occupying the island for causing the fire.
