Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Whose Limit Is All That He Can." Text contains a poem attributed to "Observer R.F.C." Displays the difficulty for pilots fighting in France. Suggests that buying bonds will aid the cause during World War I. Illustration is of a French fighter plane shooting down a German fighter.
