Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled, "Die Siegesfreiheitsanleheihe." Text refers to past German attacks on the English and Americans, with graphic description of the sinking of the Lusitania. Illustration is of a Skull with a bloody saber held through its teeth, adorned with a Prussian helmet while a scene of destruction is depicted in the background.

"Die Siegesfreiheitsanleheihe" does not translate to anything.
