At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph dated December 1947 taken by Myers from the American Red Cross. Portrays a group of teenage girls wrapping Christmas presents that would be given to patients at the Tuskegee Veterans Hospital. Typed note on reverse side profiles the local chapter of volunteers in Tuskegee and identifies those photographed. Names included are Mrs. M.G. Young, Barbara Polk, Gwendolyn Humbles, Doris Naggles, and Eula Mae Patrick.
