At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to David B. Hurd dated Hinckley Medina Co., Ohio, June 26, 1844 from Maria W. Morell. Requests payment owed to her. Suggests that he can give up a bond from a land deed. Morrell makes the request due to her own debt with her sister, Elizabeth. Reverse side contains a note dated December 3, 1844 signed by Sherman B. Warner that Maria Warner had received a bond from Hurd.
