Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One black-and-white photograph taken by United Press International dated February 2, 1966. Pictured is Represenatitve (D-Hawaii) Patsy Takemoto Mink reading Washington's Farewell Address. According to the wire transfer information, Mink was the first congresswoman to read this speech in Congress's chamber since 1932.

Patsy Takemoto Mink (1927-2002) was the first Asian American women to be elected to the U.S. Congress in 1964.
