At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One book entitled, "The Work of Afro-American Woman" by Gertrude Bustill Mossell dated 1894. The title page lists Mossell and Mrs. N.F. Mossell. The book is a collection of eight essays and seventeen poems concerning African American women in a number of fields. The titles of the essays are; The Work of the Afro-American Woman, A Sketch of Afro-American Literature, The Afro-American Woman in Verse, Our Women in Journalism, Our Afro-American Representatives at the World's Fair, The Opposite Point of View, A Lofty Study, and Caste in Universities, The poems are titled; Two Questions, Love's Promptings, Good Night, Life, My Babes that Never Grow Old, Earth's Sorrows, Query and Answer, Words, Tell the North that We are Rising, The Martyrs of To-day, A Greeting Song to Our Brothers in Africa, Child of the Southland, Why Baby was Named Chris, Only, Beautiful Things, Three Hours, and The Story of a Life.
