At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of the newspaper "Anti-Slavery Bugle," dated September 22, 1848. Newspaper contains current events concerning the 1848 presidential election, as well as the question of slavery in the election process. There are also numerous articles concerning the meetings of smaller anti-slavery groups. There is also an article concerning a Pro-Slavery mob at Harwich Massachusetts.
