Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Mary and Donald Lawyer dated January 30, 1968. Handy addresses them as his mother-in-law and father-in-law and writes that he misses Donna. He later mentions that he doesn't want to wait till he's out of the service to get married. He also mentions Dianne who he assures them is wrong and that Donna won't lose him.
