Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Mary and Donald Lawyer dated February 12, 1968. Handy addresses them as his mother-in-law and father-in-law and writes that he loves Donna and she won't lose him. Also mentions that Derkah is not his child and to tell Donna to stop worrying. He checks that Donna is getting his letters even though he is addressing them to Donna Handy, and writes that their letters get to him in about five days.
