At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Joel L. Farrow to Doris Kitchens Farrow dated September 16, 1957. Joel updates his family on his health and advises them to take care of themselves. He mentions Donald Durand getting married and notes that everyone seems to be getting married. Terrell Fincher is going home in one hundred days and he is jealous. He also inquires about Bill and Betty Farrow and expresses condolences for Mrs. Daniel. He mentions the christening of two new planes, the first two C-130s on the base.
