Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The postcard is entitled: To the Club Women of Massachusetts: Shall We Not Help Our California Sisters in Dire Distress? It was sent regarding the San Francisco earthquake that took place in 1906. It asks members to send money for aid and relief work being done in San Francisco.
