At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of 314 items belonging to the Benson family dated 1939-1945. Consists of correspondence, religious printings, prayer books, postcards and official documents. Benson primarily corresponds with his family who are located in Tallassee, Alabama. Other correspondents in the collection are his brothers also serving in different areas during the war; T. Wade Benson and Waymon Benson. Eris Benson preaches for the Church of Christ in his hometown and large amount of the material in letters are related to faith.
