At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 65,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Summary of Content: Heirs served in Company E, 3rd Alabama Regiment. The collection includes 66 letters from William A. Heirs to Sue Carter, 37 of which are wardate. Other letters are from Thomas Heirs, John D. Hays, and "Tom" to Sue Carter. These letters are separated out and arranged chronogically by author. The remainder of the collection is composed mostly of letters to Sue Carter from friends and family. These letters are arranged only by date. Includes 225 letters, 71 envelopes, and 1 photograph. Draft transcripts available for most letters.
