Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nicola signs as Colonel of the Invalid Regiment. Lists the names of four soldiers and their dates of transfer from Delaware to the Invalid Regiment. States that though the men were transferred from Delaware into the Invalid Regiment they "are returned as belonging to the quota of that state."

The Continental Congress formed the Invalid Regiment (of disabled soldiers) in 1777. The regiment could not fight, but instead participated in lighter work.
