At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Almanac with a summary of the life of Martin Van Buren, appealing for his election in 1840. Published by E. Littlefield, 122 Washington Street. Title page includes contents: "Containing, in addition to the usual calendar pages, a brief sketch of the life of Martin Van Buren; table of the electoral votes for presidents from Jefferson to Van Buren; the times of holding the elections; and the votes polled at the most recent contested elections in the several states: and also several paragraphs of well-selected politcal matter." Sewn binding, with two large stitches on the left side.
