Explains that the militia officers will examine that every man is provided with arms and ammunition, as accorded by law. Asks Knox to purchase arms for him. Also asks Knox's opinion of the times. The Revolutionary War was about to start and the Continental Congress had advised the colonies to begin training their citizens for war.

"…Next Week the Militia officers will send about to examine that every man is provided with Arms and Ammunition According to Law, and I shall depend upon you to procure me one. I here enclose you 3 Guineas, but If you shou[l]d light of one very elegant you may if you Please advance a little more and I will repay you - Please to apply to Johnston the Painter who has one if you can get that you need not Pay for it as he owes me. You will also be so kind as to ask the Advice of some good Judge before you buy it … Pray write me your Opinion of the Times."
