Howard writes, "In the battle of fair Oaks Va. the first day of June 1862 (second day of the battle) I was twice wounded in my right arm. The first wound was by a Mississippi rifle ball through the wrist. The second by a minnie-ball entering at the Elbow joint. The two wounds necessitated amputation about six hours after the second blow." Contains a Headquarters, Department of the East stamp at the top.
