At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Boerum, Simon (1724-1775), Delegate from New York; attended the Dutch school at Flatbush, N.Y., from which he was graduated; engaged in agricultural pursuits and milling; appointed county clerk of Kings County by Governor Clinton in 1750; also became clerk of the board of supervisors and held both positions until his death; member of the colonial assembly 1761-1775; deputy to the provincial convention in April 1775; Member of the Continental Congress in 1774 and 1775.
