At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Sachems resolve to end their war with the flatheads of Carolina, condole the death of Queen Anne, and request that the English sell goods at a more reasonable price. In his reply, Governor Hunter states that he will need time to think about the issues, and will have an answer at their next meeting.
