Writes to his uncle about Baltimore at the beginning of the Civil War. Reports that the Union meetings were held last night and based on the results, he is sure any measures taken toward secession would fail. States that the authorities have disbanded all the troops, proving that Union sentiment is high. Feels that the events of the last two weeks have aged him. Proclaims his love for the country and resists believing that this will end in war. "What adds to my gloom is that I cannot see the end - I cannot, however, bring my mind to any other conclusion than that it will end without Civil War."
