Discusses fighting at Vicksburg and smallpox in his regiment.

[Draft excerpts]
We have had some three days fighting at Vicksburg, one of them were hard fighting, we repulsed the enemy with about 1500 or 2000 loss on their side and our loss was about 200 killed, wounded and missing then we were ordered to this place and have been here about one week and we are a pitching our tents for the purpose of moving about 4 miles outside the fortifications, the cause of our move is that we have the small pox in this Regiment and we have to move to keep it from scattering in other regiments. We had five cases reported yesterday of smallpox and they were the first that has been reported in the camps.
