A mounted print of a photograph showing the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant. Title taken from text on recto. A small white house stands with two trees on either side of it, surrounded by a wooden fence with its gate open. A small boy huddles in the front doorway. There is debris scattered in front of the fence. Also printed on recto: "Entered according to Act of Congress, July 6th, 1864, by Goodwin & Dickinson, in the Clerks Officer of the Southern District of Ohio." "J. G. Rogers, M. D. Family Physician."
Another image, from the exact same angle, is more widely known (there is another very similar one where the man has changed position). It, in fact, shows a middle-aged man instead of the young boy standing in front of the doorway. This man is likely to be Dr. Rogers. One of the windows has been closed and the drapes drawn the other way. Due to the exactness of the angle, it seems likely that it was taken on the same date. Dates have been given for various sources as 1863, 1864, 1868, and 1900. There was also no act of congress on that date as the 38th Congress was on recess from July 4th on. Perhaps it is the Ohio House of Representatives (though the Southern District of Ohio is a federal court)?
