At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A chromolithographic poster depicting African American soldiers fighting in World War I. In the poster an American bombers are flying overhead and an American soldier is boyoneting an enemy soldier. Featured prominently in towards the middle of the poster is a large American flag and in the background is a smaller American flag flanked by British and Italian flags. This poster is dated circa 1919.
