Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "8. Bridging a Stream Under Fire" depicting an explosion at a soldier's bridge construction site. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative that describes an occasion where was being built by "GI" engineers and that they were soon attacked by "The Reds." Text describes the men as preserving the attack and finishing the bridge.
