At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Mary Mitchell from Wallace Mitchell dated Camp near Warrentown, Va., March 5, 1864. Pertains to being vaccinated and Confederate soldiers deserting. Describes the wounds of some soldiers in his picket, and the capture of rebel deserters and scouts. Also included are small painted illustrations of flowers and soldiers.
