At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lee's farewell orders to his troops, written the day after his surrender to Grant. Docketed "General R. E. Lee's Farewell Orders." Written from Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This version is said to be one of the second group made out by Lee's secretary, Charles Marshall. (The handwriting of the text is Marshall's.)
