Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Disbound orderly book containing printed orders issued by Major General Winfield Scott and General William Orlando Butler during the Mexican War. Orders are signed by their aides, Henry Lee Scott and Lorenzo Thomas, respectively.

H.L. Scott was Winfield Scott's son-in-law. In 1861, he wrote the Military Dictionary.
