Beach enlisted on 30 August 1862 at Niagara, New York as a Private. On 30 August 1862 he mustered into "F" Co. NY 50th Engineers. He was mustered out on 13 June 1865 at Fort Barry, Virginia. He was promoted to artificer approximately 15 December 1862.
