Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Forty letters written as President of the Bank of the United States to William B. Rochester, who intended to establish a new branch of the bank in Buffalo, New York. Letters are regarding the re-chartering of the Bank of the United States as Biddle establishes a branch of the bank in Buffalo, New York, changes in policy and tightening of credit as President Jackson's opposition to the Bank is felt, and finally, the closing of the Bank after the expiration of its charter.
