Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Witness, and likely the author, John S. Graves. Agreement to sell Nalle's farm to Crenshaw for $32,400. Stipulates that Nalle will continue to manage the farm for the remainder of the year until the crops have been harvested, and the harvest will be split. Includes a detailed list of farm accoutrements also to be handed over. Contains clause: "Should the approach or presence of the Enemy by such as to interfere with the cultivation of the farm or threaten the safety of the stock on it Mr Nalle is to exercise his discretion and pursue the same course with his stock & property as he does with Mr Crenshaws & "vice versa."
