Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Seth Loring, Secretary. Writes to the Deputy Paymaster General of the Forces of the United States of America requesting payment of $200 for Captain Benjamin Wallcott of Colonel Thomas Marshall's Regiment for five months of pay beginning 6 July 1777. Accompanied by a certificate dated 27 March 1778 written by Marshall to Heath certifying that Wallcott was in his regiment since 6 July 1777. The two documents are attached by a wax seal. Heath was a major general in the Continental Army.
