Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document ordering Captain Nathaniel Bliss to raise a company of soldiers and review the towns stock of munitions. He is also to make sure his men are equipped and the town Select Men informed if munitions are needed. An autograph signed note by Bliss on the verso attests to his compliance.
