Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bradstreet, a British officer, orders Abraham W. Cortin, a temporary deputy paymaster general, to make the payment, which was owed for "Sundries supplied for His Majesty's service" during the French and Indian War. A note signed by Livingston below the order states that the payment should be made to Dirck Jansen. A note signed my Jansen on the verso indicates the payment was received on 8 August 1759.
