The English part of the document certifies that Guillaume de Luce served in the Northern Army for the United States of America, and that he served well. Signed by Horatio Gates at Yorktown on 11 February 1778. The French part attests that Gates' signature is true and that the document has been countersigned by the French secretary and affixed with the French army's seal. The seal is just below the last line of text. The document is signed by "Gerard" on 23 February 1779 in Philadelphia. Gerard is Conrad Alexander Gerard, the first French minister to the United States, in Philadelphia from 1778 to 1779. Also signed by "Son Excellence Vitry."

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
