Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Charles Wyndman, Second Earl of Egremont and British Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1761-1763. Egremont signs based on the orders of King George III. Countersigned by Thomas Tyrwhitt as Under-Secretary at War and John F. [Hesse?]. Hesse certifies that Lorimer's appointment has been entered in the Office of Thomas Gore, Commissary General of Musters. Appoints Lorimer as surgeon to the garrison on the British Island of Belleisle. Issued at St. James Court. Contains a length of rectangular blue seal. Includes a royal stamp on verso depicting a crown and the letters "G R."

Wyndham was Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1761-1763.
