Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Crittenden signs as a witness, stating "These are to Certify All whom it may Concern that at a Court of Examiners of the Surgeon's Company held at their Theatre in the Old Baily London the 5th day of Feb. 1 Inst. Mr. John Lorimer was then Examined and being found well qualified to serve as Surgeon to any Regiment in His Majesty's service...."
