Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Regarding his public quarrel with General Andrew Jackson. Feels that Jackson is trying to make him look bad in any way possible, but is not too concerned. Addressed to "Major," from whom he had received correspondence. Surname of recipient may be "Mercer," as Scott mentions that he looks forward to seeing the recipient and Mrs. Mercer.

Winfield Scott was made General-in-Chief of the army in 1841, was the hero of the Mexican war, and an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1852. Earlier in life he had been a lieutenant colonel in the War of 1812.
