States: "Certain men belonging to Capt Jos. B. Cherry's company have come in and surrendered themselves and are desirous of returning to their command. Mr. Jos. B. Cherry has written you a full statement of the facts. They are not within my personal knowledge but I have no doubt his statement is entirely true. You know he would make none other. If you can grant the request made in Mr. Cherry's letter, I shall be highly gratified."
