At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

My dear Mother,
I was taken prisoner on the 27 of May. I arrived here yesterday, Please write to me as soon as you receive this & send me $20, & as you have a chance send me a ? & some under clothes, some colored shirts & a pair of grew cloth pants, also some writing paper & stamps only write a half sheet of paper when you write, you can send me a boy with some clothes & eatable by Adams express & direct your letters E. H. Hall Co. A. 10th Division Point Lookout. Please send me a good thick blanket. Give my love to Father & all the rest of the family. I remain your affect. Son
