Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Edward H. Hall Papers consist predominantly of Hall's correspondence to his mother, father, and sister during his service as a private in the 1st Maryland Cavalry, C.S.A. Hall was captured and held at Point Lookout, Md., from 1864-1865; most of the correspondence held here dates from his years of internment as a POW. The collection also contains one pre-war letter, and several post-war items pertaining to reunions of Hall's regiment. More detailed inventory available.
