My dear Mother,
I received your letter the day before yesterday. How sad that poor little Nannie should have been taken, & now Carnie ill with the same disease. I hope that she may be spared, but the Lord will do what is best. I fear that all of my letters have not been sent. I got my box yesterday & I assure you that it came in just in time, as we were entirely out of provisions. I wrote to cousin Minnie yesterday. I received her letter the same day I did yours. Love to her & tell her to write often, as it is about the only pleasure I have to get letters. I would not be much surprised if we were sent to Elmina N. Y. & I believe I prefer going, as there are no attractions here for me, but I suppose that it is the case with all prisons, but from the description the prisoners give I expect it is a better prison than this. Love to Father Uncle G & all the rest & believe me as ever yr affect son
Edward.
