Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Multiple receipt entries also signed by Eliphilet Newell, John Gilles, and other officers serving under Henry Knox. Notes supplies received by officers in either New York or Mount Washington from Jonathan Pollard, the quartermaster of Knox's artillery regiment. Lists on the back enumerate cash received from officers for stockings and shoes.
