Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Shaw, General Henry Knox's aide, writes to Tilghman, George Washington's aide. Reports that the bearer of this note, Lt. Williams, has been robbed of all of his clothes and needs to obtain an order from the clothing store to replace his lost items. Another officer who lived with Williams was robbed by the same villains.
